Oral and dental care is important for a healthy life and healthy aging process. An unhealthy mouth can negatively affect your nutrition, which is one of your vital functions, and lead to different health problems. Besides, no one wants to smile and talk with missing teeth. Therefore, a tooth loss that you may experience can negatively affect your oral health as well as your social life.

Will Medicare Pay for Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most common applications that we, dentists, use in treatments. Their applicability to almost every patient, their appearance as your natural teeth, their ease of care and their very long life are the reasons we can count in the very preference of implants. However, implants are more expensive than other dental treatment methods. Especially in the United States, the United Kingdom and other European countries, dental implant treatments are priced far above what any citizen can afford. Here, many patients living in the USA and in need of implant treatment ask the question 'Will Medicare pay for dental implants?'. By examining the issue, let's look together at whether the Medicare program will pay for your dental implants and alternative ways to get dental implants at affordable prices.

What is Medicare?

Before the question, 'Will Medicare pay for dental implants?', let's talk about Medicare. The program is a nationwide health program that was launched in 1966 in the United States and is now managed by the Medicare and Medicaid Health Services Center. Medicare program, according to its own report, applied health insurance to approximately 60 million people in 2018, 52 million of whom were 65 years of age and over and 8 million of whom were young. Again, based on this report, the Medicare program covers only half of the health expenditures of those registered. The remaining is mostly covered by patients purchasing additional insurance programs.

Who is eligible for Medicare?

Before you start thinking 'Will Medicare pay for dental implants?', you may want to know if you are eligible for the program. If you are 65 years of age or older, you are required to be a resident or U.S. citizen who has lived in the United States for at least 5 years, to be eligible for social security or railroad pensions, and to have made Medicare payroll payments during your working period. If you are under 65 years of age, you are also required to have a certain level of disability and thus be entitled to a pension. Even if you have ALS disease or permanent kidney failure requiring regular dialysis, you can benefit from Medicare programs even if you are under 65 years of age.

Does Medicare cover dental implants?

Many people living in the United States and suffering from dental diseases wonder whether or not the Medicare program covers dental implants. Since we have taken an overview of the Medicare program, we can answer the question 'Will Medicare pay for dental implants?'. Medicare and Medicare Supplement insurances do not usually cover your routine dental care and implant treatments.

Therefore, we can say that it is quite difficult to benefit from Medicare for dental implants. In these cases, we can only talk about certain exceptions. For example, you are included in Medicare Part A if you need dental care before heart surgeries, if you experience tooth loss as a result of a specific injury or accident, or if you receive oral cancer treatment. Thus, you can receive some dental treatments, but these only include treatments such as extraction of problematic teeth and general care. You may still have to pay for the implants. You will also be asked to fulfill the conditions such as being enrolled in the Medicare program for one year even if you are eligible to receive a dental implant.

Therefore, Medicare does not cover your dental implants unless you have the exceptions specified. Or long waiting period may occur. This can lead to worsening of the dental conditions you already suffer from, making them untreatable and therefore paying extra.

What should I do if Medicare does not pay for my dental implant?

If the implant required for your oral health does not meet your treatment, you may consider traveling abroad for your implant. In this context, there are many countries you can visit. For example, in dental clinics in Turkey, implant treatments are priced very low compared to your country. In addition to low implant prices in Turkey, dental clinics in our country carry out studies with high success rates in implant treatments.
